The A-6E TRAM (Target Recognition and Attack Multi-Sensor) is a ground attack aircraft for the United States that was introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

HistoryEdit

The Grumman A-6E/TRAM Intruder is an upgraded version of the A-6E; the definitive variant of the A-6 which served from 1972 until the mid-1990's. The A-6E/TRAM featured the Hughes AAS-33 TRAM (Target Recognition and Attack Multi-sensor), a chin-mounted targeting pod which carried both FLIR and a laser system for rangefinding, designating and marked-target seeking. The TRAM Intruder first flew in March of 1974 and entered service in 1979. Being based on the A-6E, it has better ECM, radar, and stores management than the A-6A.

OverviewEdit

AirLand BattleEdit

The A-6E TRAM carries 12 Mk. 82 Snakeye bombs, compared to the A-6A's 8. Its survivability is enhanced through better ECM to deal with enemy SAMs and AAMs, however, the A-6E is still fairly slow compared to other strike platforms, and spends more time in enemy Integrated Air Defense zones (IADS) than an aircraft like the F-16 or Tornado. At the same time, it is relatively inexpensive compared to those other strike or multi-role aircraft.

The large quantity of bombs the A-6E carries makes it useful to attack lightly armored columns and troops, though the Mk.82 lack the punching power of heavier bombs for use against tanks or heavily armored targets. The TRAM Intruder is utilized for the close air support/strike role for attacking ground targets only. It carries no AAMs or cannon, and cannot defend itself from aerial opponents, and utilizing fighter escort is highly advisable.

Red DragonEdit

The A-6E TRAM in Wargame: Red Dragon is a 140-point Naval Anti-Ship aircraft available to NATO decks, which carries four AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and no other armament. Bombing duties have been left to the A-6A Intruder in Red Dragon. The A-6E has improved ECM (30%) compared to its ALB configuration. As with AirLand Battle, the A-6E requires fighter escort if enemy air activity is anticipated. The AGM-84 is a fire-and-forget anti-ship missile, which allows the A-6E to fire its ASM and break away, minimizing the probability it will be shot down by a ship's on-board defense systems.
