Available to NATO forces, the AMX-10P is one of two APCs available to French infantry along with the VAB.

Overview[]

Contrasted with the VAB, the AMX-10P has:

  • A slower speed.
  • A smaller operational range.
  • An autocannon, providing better range and damage output, as well as the possibility to stun enemy armor.
  • Some side armour.
  • A higher price.

For its price, the AMX-10P remains weaker than the similar Marder 1, with less armour and a slower speed

Unlike the VAB that is used to transport troops fast from one point to the other, French infantry in an AMX-10P take it for the fire support it provides, for the double of the price of a VAB.

In Wargame: Red Dragon , the AMX-10P has the same price and armament as the VAB T20/13; the former is used by Armored and Mechanized decks, while the latter is used in Motorized and Marine decks.  The VAB retains its superior mobility, while the AMX-10P has superior armor.

Compared with the Soviet BMP-2, the AMX-10P is very similar. The French unit's primary advantage is its price, and its only other advantage is that it's ammunition will last 1.2 times as long. However, for its 33% higher price, the Soviet unit has an ATGM and an autocannon with 1.5 times the suppression.

History[]

The AMX 10P was developed after 1965 to replace the AMX-VCI in French service, and the first prototypes were completed in 1968. It has NBC protection and amphibious capabilities, with hydro jets to swim in water. The AMX-10P has been operated in the past by France, the United Arab Emirates, Greece, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Mexico.

The first production vehicles were delivered in 1973 to the 7th Mechanised Brigade stationed at Reims. The AMX-10P mounts a GIAT M693 20 mm automatic cannon with a day sight magnification of x6. It has an effective range of 1500 metres. The frontal armour protects against 23 mm API and 14.5 mm API rounds while all-round protection is against small arms bullets and artillery shell splinters only. In the French Army, 108 are being upgraded between 2006 and 2008, improving the armour and mobility. The modifications will significantly increase the vehicles protection with the installation of add-on armour, while improving mobility by fitting new suspension systems and a strengthened gearbox. The AMX-10P tracked IFV will be upgraded by Giat Industries.

Two mechanized infantry formations served the Division Blindee either as Groupement de Chasseurs or Regiment d'Infanterie. Each infantry formation has three companies equipped with AMX-10P.

An active armour kit is currently available. The French Army is currently replacing its AMX-10P vehicles with the new Véhicule Blindé de Combat d'Infanterie. The first regiment to retire all its AMX-10P was the 35th Infantry Regiment in Belfort in December 2008.
