Canadian Airborne '90 |
The Canadian Airborne is a new rifle squad infantry unit for Canada that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon. They replace the Vandoos as Canada's prime shock infantry unit.
History
Tracing its lineage back to the World War II era units: the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and the legendary First Special Service Force, the Canadian Airborne Regiment drew on an impressive pedigree and hardened traditions.
Created during the Cold War, the Airborne Regiment were to be Canada's rapid reaction force. Deployed during the Montreal October Crisis, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and during the Kosovo crisis the regiment proved itself.
It was the regiments final deployment to Somalia that saw its demise. After the torture and murder of a Somalian teenager, the subsequent investigation that revealed discipline issues in the deployed battalion, the entire regiment was controversially disbanded.
The airborne capabilities of the Canadian military were maintained by 3rd battalions of each active regiment until finally coalescing in the modern day Canadian Special Operations Regiment.
Overview
The Canadian Airborne is Canada's primary shock unit. Its elite training will allow it to wipe the floor with non-special force PACT units and its relative 'cheapness' (20 points) allows the player to deploy swarms of these units. However in a CQB fight against SMG armed infantry, the Airborne will suffer.
Armed with the Carl Gustav M3, the Airborne can destroy light-armored APCS and tanks, though heavy/MBTs should be approached with caution and from the sides. With a CQC capable machine guns and a high-caliber assault rifle, the Airborne should be able to destroy multiple regular line or light infantry squads.
The Airborne should ideally be paired up with SMG armed recon infantry or APC when clearing jungles. For clearing cities, especially against SMG armed troops, the airbone should only advance with supporting units and/or artillery.
The Airborne is one of the few cost-effective shock infantry units, with capable multi-role capabilities. Use this unit as the core of any infantry assault, but be aware of its weakness against units such as Spetznaz or Li-Jian.
