F-104G Starfighter | CF-104 Starfighter |
Available to NATO forces, the F-104 Starfighter is an American-built interceptor and fighter-bomber aircraft, used by Norwegian, Danish, and West German air forces.
History[]
The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, single-seat, T-Tail supersonic fighter. It was the first fighter to use the General Electric M61A1 Gatling-style Vulcan Cannon. First flown 4 March 1954 and introduced to American arsenals in 1958, the Starfighter was highly exported to NATO nations. The F-104G was manufactured under license by several nations including Canadair, Messerschmitt, Dornier, Fiat, Fokker, and SABCA. It featured a strengthened fuselage, wing structure, landing gear, increased internal fuel capacity, a larger ventral fin, and revised flaps for better maneuverability.
In Norwegian service, the F-104 Starfighter was bought from Canada. Initially purchasing F-104G's built by Canadair in 1963 as part of the Military Assistance Program, they also received another surplus eighteen CF-104's and four CF-104D's from Canada in 1974. 331 squadron replaced F-86 Sabers in 1963 . These were replaced by F-16 in 1981.
Overview[]
AirLand Battle[]
The F-104G Starfighter is a relatively inexpensive multi-role fighter available to Norwegian and NATO decks. The Starfighter carries a 20mm Vulcan cannon, two HEAT cluster bombs and a pair of AIM-9J Sidewinder missiles. It carries no ECM, and its top speed is a somewhat modest 750km/h. Although its lack of ECM and lack of a long range air-to-air missile leaves the type vulnerable to long-range SAMs and AAMs, at 80 points per aircraft, this is not a prohibitive drawback. The type can be used to effectively attack armored columns or enemy helicopters operating nearby.
Red Dragon[]
The F-104G Starfighter in Wargame: Red Dragon is left largely untouched from its AirLand Battle configuration. It has the same cost, loadout, speed, ECM, strengths and weaknesses as in AirLand Battle.
