The F-4F Phantom is a new West German air superiority fighter for their Category C decks; it was made available in the Magna Carta DLC for Wargame: AirLand Battle and is also seen in Wargame: Red Dragon.
The F-4F Phantom II is a variant of the F-4E optimized for the air-superiority role for the West German Air Force. It lacks the seventh fuel cell of the F-4E, slotted tailplane or any air-to-surface weapon carriage capacity. It carries an APQ-100 radar, outer wing slats, a Sidewinder compliment, and retains the 20mm Vulcan cannon first installed on the F-4E.
The F-4F Phantom II is a moderate-cost air superiority fighter, but which is best served either attacking helicopters or strike platforms, rather than facing off against enemy fighters. The two main reasons for this have to do with the F-4F's armament, and poor ECM. Since the F-4F lacks any medium-range missile compliment, it must close to short range to engage an enemy fighter, and its poor ECM leaves it vulnerable to longer-range AAMs and SAMs. The F-4F's loadout is ideal, however, for dealing with enemy helicopters. The Phantom can close quickly with its 900km/h top speed, and the four AIM-9F Sidewinder missiles provide the F-4F with enough shots to deal with helos effectively. The M61A1 Vulcan cannon also provides the F-4F with tactical flexibility, as it can strafe ground targets, helicopters, or defend itself against an enemy fighter if it gets to dogfight range.
The F-4F's combination of speed, short-range missiles and a cannon also lend it to be an expedient defense against enemy strike platforms. The four AIM-9's give the F-4F several chances to hit its target, and it can follow up at the merge with a burst of cannon fire, which can stun, critically damage or shoot down a strike aircraft before it can release its ordnance.
The F-4F Phantom II in Wargame: Red Dragon is a 75-point air superiority fighter available to West German and NATO decks, but which is best served either attacking helicopters or strike platforms, rather than facing off against enemy fighters. It has seen a slight bump up for its ECM (20%), features Good radar, and has otherwise seen no changes to its loadout or characteristics compared to its AirLand Battle configuration. Its Vulcan cannon has slightly less range and accuracy than in AirLand Battle. The F-4F costs five points less to field than ALB, and its strengths and weaknesses in Red Dragon are largely the same as they were in the prior installment.
