The F/A-18A Hornet is a multirole combat aircraft for the United States that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine supersonic, all-weather carrier-capable multirole combat jet, designed to dogfight and attack ground targets (F/A designation for Fighter/Attack). Designed by McDonnell Douglas and Northrop, the F/A-18 was derived from the latter's YF-17 in the 1970s for use by the United States Navy and Marine Corps.
The F/A-18A Hornet represents one of the best multi role Aircraft that the United States and multi-national decks. It is a plane that is highly capable of fighting one on one fighters with most planes, unlike the F/A-18C it had Medium ECM which means that the plane can't go up against enemy Interceptors and Air Superiority Fighters that are equal or greeater than it in cost. It packs a punch with it's AGM-65E against even the most formidable PACT armoured force. It's best used defensively early on before the Enemies Integrated Air Defense Network has been suppressed and destroyed then switching to a more aggressive stance once it has been disabled.
Over all the F/A-18A is a decent and cost effective Aircraft if used intelligently, it is not a super plane and must be respected and cared for which, if done right will cause your opponents to fear the sight of a plane cruising towards their armoured columns.
The F/A-18A Hornet in Wargame: Red Dragon is a 135-point multi-role combat aircraft available to American and NATO decks. It carries the same loadout as in AirLand Battle, however, its AGM-65E Maverick missile is now a Semi-Active Laser-Homing missile, not fire-and-forget as in ALB. It carries slightly improved ECM (30%), and its strengths and weaknesses are largely the same in Red Dragon as they are in AirLand Battle.
