FJB-40 are the Pact's special forces infantry, suitable for supply line raiding.

The FJB-40 are armed with a commando version of the assault rifles given to motorized DDR soldiers, however the main distinction is that the FJB have an anti-air small arms weapon, even though it's incredibly inaccurate.

The FJB-40 are good at raiding supply lines, like other special forces infantry, however their HE 3 assault rifles, high availability, air based transports, and good price allow them to fulfill anti-infantry and support roles, they're not good for anything else, due to their lack of anti-tank weapons.

In 1960, DDR's first airborne infantry formation was made from the 5th Motorized Rifle Battalion. It was the only airborne formation within the DDR.

It is unknown weather the unit actually carried anti-air small arms, as there are no records of this happening. The Fallshirmjager (German for paratrooper, abbreviated as FJ) used identical rifles to their motorized compatriots, the exception being in the late eighties when they recieved the Mpi-AK-74N (East German AK-74 variant) first as part of a planned overhaul of the country's military.

The 40th Airborne Infantry wore stone grey berets, and wore uniforms similar to other infantry forces in the DDR, field uniforms were Strichtarn (raindrop) camouflage. The FJB-40 was drilled rigorously, every year candidates would apply to join the unit, and only 10% would qualify for training, during training, the unit is taught a number of skills which were to help them with their mission. The unit itself had a strong espirit de corps, as its members were knowingly part of an elite unit.

The FJB-40 were meant to be used as para-commando infantry, assigned to raid enemy supply lines, and do commando operations on weakly guarded buildings of importance.
