The Fernspäher are one of NATO's special forces infantry, suitable for long range reconnaissance.
Armed with the reliable G3 assault rifle, the Fernspäher is a reconnaissance special forces airborne-capable unit that conducts special surveillance of enemy activity, trained in many forms of asymmetric warfare, the "long range scouts" are specialists behind enemy lines, they are not meant to be used as shock troops but as deep reconnaissance specialists, they are also very good marksmen however and quite capable in the anti-infantry combat role.
Use Fernspäher as pure recon infantry, always position them hidden and in cover so that they can avoid combat and position them on the flanks of or behind enemy combat units. Their TPz Fuchs is the fastest NATO ground transport in the game which allows them to get into position fast and their Dornier 205 helicopter transport also allows the Fernspäher to conduct airborne insertions. Do not position their transport near to them though because that will give their position away. Their cost might be high, but for that Fernspäher have the highest rifle accuracy in the game (the data listed in the armory is incorrect), they also have 12 reserves available; most useful recon infantry have only 8. As a rule never use Fernspäher to clear out anything unless it's enemy infantry; since the Fernspäher AT grenades can miss the target when the enemy quickly moves his tanks and/or other vehicles.
In Airland Battle and Red Dragon, the Fernspäher was radically changed into a sniper team. Carrying highly accurate PSG-1s, these snipers don't only make an excellent recon unit, but also exceptional long ranged infantry albeit their ability to defend themselves from vehicles now suffer with massive reduction on their LAWs
Created in 1962, with doctrines having been heavily influenced by Finnish special operations troops, German Gebirgsjäger, and Fallschirmjäger, the Fernspäher operated deep behind enemy lines, surviving off of para-dropped supplies, and did surveillance of important equipment, counter-terrorism, forward air control, and POW liberation.
During the Cold War each Corps had a Fernspäher Companies (100, 200 and 300). These Fernspäher Companies serves as Long-range reconnaissance patrol role sending small, heavily armed long-range reconnaissance teams that patrol deep in enemy-held territory.
Today's Bundeswehr intends on disbanding the remaining Fernsspählerkompanie (the 200th), and merge it with numerous other reconnaissance units, to form an airborne reconnaissance unit.
