Canada purchased 124 Ferret Mk.1 in 1954 and left service in 1981. Ferret Mk.1 did not have a turret like their later counterparts. These were used in three reconnaissance regiments and were issued in small amounts to armored regiments and field engineers with one in each field engineer troop. Ferret Mk. 1 served in the various UN missions like UNEF in the Sinai Desert and UNFICYP along with service in forces in West Germany and Canada.
Ferrets were replaced by Lynx in the armored regiment.
