The M132 Zippo is a flamethrower vehicle for the United States in the Wargame series that first appeared in Wargame: European EscalationIt was the only flamethrower vehicle available to NATO in European Escalation.

History[]

The M132 was a United States built flamethrower armed variant of the M113 and M113A1 armored personnel carriers developed in the early 1960s. Approximately 350 were accepted into service.

The first prototype of the vehicle was produced in August 1962 when a flamethrower was mounted on a M113. This prototype was only used in combat situations four times that year.

The vehicle was based on an M113. The driver sits in the front left of the hull. A small cupola in the center of the hull mounts an M10-8 flame gun with a coaxial 7.62 mm caliber M73 machine gun. The weapons could be traversed though 360 degrees and elevated to +55 degrees and depressed to −15 degree. The passenger compartment was removed, and replaced with an M10 fuel and pressure unit and four spherical 50 gallon fuel tanks.

The 200 gallon fuel capacity enabled it to fire for up to 32 seconds, and the pressure unit enabled it to reach targets at a range of 200 meters.

The Vietnam Mechanized Infantry Battalion had access to a flame platoon equipped with 4 M132.

Overview[]

European Escalation[]

It has a rather slow speed and armor that can be compared to most APCs'. Its small fuel tanks mean that to reach a destination, it has to use roads in priority and needs supply trucks to follow it when it goes off-road.

Its flamethrower can stun any unit that it hits, including tanks, pretty easily in battle. It has two primary uses: the first one is to clear forests, especially when combined with infantry assaults. Best used in pairs, zippos can use their flames by firing over the infantry they are following, efficiently reducing infantry numbers and stunning tanks to prevent them from firing at your infantry. They can also be used to blind fire at woods where infantry is known to hide while staying out of range of LAW-type weapons.

It can also be used to reinforce a tank assault by stunning enemy armor in range, but again, used in a pair to increase the speed at which the stun takes effect. Switching targets often will maximise the effectiveness. Simply shooting at a unit is helping it to panic, reducing its battle effectiveness, but in the case of the Zippo, it's speed causes it to often be too far from the action.
