The Panavia Tornado MFG (Marinefliegergeschwader - "Marine Air Wing") is a Naval Anti-Ship aircraft available to NATO decks. It first appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engine, two-seat, swing-wing multi-role fighter used by Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. It was developed in three main variants: IDS (Interdictor/Strike), ADV (Air Defense Variant), and ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance). The genesis of the Tornado dates to the 1960's, where West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada began examining potential replacements for their F-104 Starfighter aircraft. The Multi-Role Combat Aircraft team saw several changes by 1969, Canada dropping out of the project for political reasons, Belgium deciding to purchase Mirage aircraft from France, and the Netherlands deciding the aircraft being developed was too complicated. Panavia GmbH was formed by the United Kingdom, West Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands (before they left the project) to produce the Tornado.

The Tornado IDS or "Interdictor/Strike" was the type used by the West German Marineflieger for anti-ship and marine reconnaissance missions. 112 of the type were purchased to replace the aging Starfighter, and were split into two wing. Each Wing has two squadrons has 24 Tornados each. The Marineflieger IDS was given compatibility with Kormoran anti-ship missiles, cluster bombs, and later, the AGM-88 HARM. It was also given compatibility with panoramic optical and infrared cameras for the marine reconnaissance mission.

Overview[]

Red Dragon[]

The Tornado MFG is a 180-point Naval Anti-Ship aircraft, carrying four Kormoran anti-ship missiles, two AIM-9L Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, and an internal Bk 27 cannon. The type has very good ECM (40%) and excellent top speed. The Kormoran is extremely accurate and has good AP and explosive power. It is, however, shorter ranged than most other NATO anti-ship missiles, forcing the Tornado to get closer to its intended target before firing. The AIM-9L's and cannon allow the Tornado to attack helicopters or strafe lightly armored ground units.

The Tornado MFG's major drawbacks are its high cost and lack of a long-range AAM. A fighter escort is a good idea, since the Tornado cannot fend of an aerial attacker until it is in very close range, and the Kormoran's short range requires the plane to get closer to its target than an Exocet, Sea Eagle or Harpoon, leaving the Tornado more likely to be detected and intercepted by an enemy fighter. Its high ECM helps its survivability.
