The SU-122-54 is a self-propelled 122 mm gun derived from the T-54 chasis designed to fight light armour threats such as infantry. It's main ammo is composed of HEAT rounds, while good against low armour value it suffers against heavy armour.
History[]
Sometimes known as IT-122 the SU-122-54 was based on the T54 chasis. Between 1955 and 1957, 77 vehicles were built with minor differences between production lots (different commander's cupola etc.). The SU-122-54 had a modified chassis, with small spaces between the first, second and fourth pair of wheels and a large gap between the third, similar to the T-62's and a superstructure, built into the hull, housing the 122 mm M-62-T gun for which the vehicle carries 32 rounds. The secondary armament consisted of two KPVT heavy machine guns, one mounted as an anti-aircraft machine gun near the commander's hatch and the other mounted coaxially with the main gun. The vehicle carried 600 rounds for the machine guns. The main gun has a fume extractor positioned right behind the muzzle brake, some vehicles did not have the fume extractor. Other variations included a different commander's copula.
Overview and tactics[]
- A unit similar to the ASU-85, the SU-122-54 is designed to fight enemy infantry, with better speed and armour in may a better option if the player wills to sacrifice AP power and accuracy for some extra area of effect damage.
- As with other cheap soviet units, the SU-122-54 can work as cannon fodder both defending CVs, FOBs and more expensive units, it also counts with a HMG which may scare copters from coming too close.
- With a decent speed and fuel capacity the SU-122-54 is capable to mobilize on its own without requiring too much supply support, this allows them to bring their screen services when assaulting enemy position.
- An underdog of the PACT armoury, this unit may be attractive to players wishing to try units other than the usual T series and build challenging decks.
