The Kanonenjagdpanzer is a West German tank destroyer that first appears in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
History[]
The Kanonenjagdpanzer (literally "tank destroyer with cannon") was developed in the mid-60's as a light, highly mobile, tank destroyer, inspired by the Wehrmacht's experience during WW2, especially from the Jagdpanzer IV.
The KanJPz sports a 90mm gun, salvaged from the then already outdated M47 Patton tanks. When it was first fielded in 1966, well used, it could still be a threat to Warsaw Pact's T-55 & T-62.
But soon, the introduction of a new generation of Soviet MBT like the T-64 & T-72 made the KanJPz obsolete as a tank destroyer. Soon afterwards, most of them were refitted as ATGM platform (the Jaguar 2 from WEE) by removing the gun and equipping it with TOW missiles. Still, mobile and with a low profile, the KanJPz can be a cheap and very good light armor, APC or IFV hunter even in the mid-80's.[1]
Last of these served in Jagdpanzer Companies of Heimatschütz Brigades and the Jagdpanzer Platoons of Heimatschütz Battalions being replaced by M48 and Leopard 1.
Overview[]
Red Dragon[]
As mentioned in the History section, KanJPz is only a threat to T-55 and T-62, not a strong enemy. The biggest problem with KanJPz is its Accuracy, which is only 30% and no Stabilizer. This level is straightly lower than T-62, while this same 25-point opponent got a 11 AP Power main gun and a 8 Front Armor. (In WAB KanJPz will be completely overwhelmed by T-62.)
The only advantage of KanJPz is its RoF, which can play a role in ambushes and infantry support. However, for Eurocorps, France has better and more functional AMX-10 RC and AMX-13/90 in the Recon slot, and ERC-90 Sagaie in the Vehicles slot.
