The Hatsuyuki-class destroyer (はつゆき型護衛艦) is a class of Japanese destroyer that appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The Hatsuyuki-class was a line of destroyers built for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force from 1979 to 1986. In all, twelve ships of the class were commissioned. As of 2015, a number of the class are still in service, with several scheduled for disarmament and transfer to the Japanese Coast Guard.

The Hatsuyukis were nominally a series of general-purpose destroyers, but their primary role was anti-submarine warfare, employing the deck mounted ASROC anti-submarine rocket launcher, and the embarked SH-60 helicopter.

Overview[]

The Hatsuyuki is among the more rarely seen BLUFOR naval units, on account of it's peculiar situation vis-a-vis other BLUFOR naval assets. While more expensive than the La Fayette class, it is not especially more powerful, but is still unable to go toe-to-toe with the top tier Udaloy II or Sovremenny class destroyers.

The vessel's weaponry comprises a single 76 mm gun, eight Harpoon missiles, a Sea Sparrow launcher with 32 missiles, as well as two CIWS mounts. All armament, including CIWS, on the Hatsuyuki is mounted forward, although the Standard missile launcher can engage targets at any angle. As a result, the ship is extremely vulnerable to attacks from the rear, and should be pointed at potential threats at all times.

The Sea Sparrow SAM is arguably the Hatsuyuki's most potent weapon, with a 4200m range that allows it to engage REDFOR aircraft at long distances. The relatively low accuracy, however, largely compromises its effectiveness against aircraft with high ECM, such as the MiG-29K. This, combined with the relatively large number of other SAM-equipped BLUFOR vessels, makes the class altogether unattractive for the air defense role.

Unusually for large warships, the Hatsuyuki is capable of firing both of its Harpoon missile launchers simultaneously, allowing for two missile salvos. This makes for a higher likelihood of penetrating enemy CIWS defenses, though the vessel's cost means that arraying several Hatsuyuki's for the anti-surface role is prohibitively expensive. Nonetheless, the ship may experience success against singular low-tier REDFOR ships, such as the Najin class in missile combat.

The 76 mm gun armament is a major weakpoint of the design, as the diminutive cannon is substantially inferior to the 100mm and 130mm weapons on larger REDFOR warships. Due to the high hull strength of the Hatsuyuki, it may triumph in battles against similarly armed missile boats such as the Tarantul Class, but will suffer in an engagement with larger vessels, since even the relatively mediocre Najin Class can bombard the Hatsuyuki from outside of its gun range. As with all similarly armed vessels, the Hatsuyuki can provide a modicum of coastal support against land forces, although vessels such as the Dong-hae can offer the same amount of firepower for significantly lower cost.
