The Harrier GR.3 is a multirole combat aircraft for the United Kingdom that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
The Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.3 is a single-engine, single-seat, Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing (V/STOL) multi-role combat aircraft used by the Royal Air Force. The GR.3 is an upgraded version of the Harrier GR.1, featuring the more powerful Pegasus Mk. 103 engine, improved sensors, nose-mounted laser tracker, and installation of an ECM system. The Harrier GR.3 saw action during the Falklands War in the early 1980's, though the type was not designed for sea duties, providing close air support to ground forces.
The Harrier GR.3 is a relatively inexpensive multirole combat platform available to United Kingdom and NATO decks. Equipped with the twin ADEN 30 cannons and two 500kg MC/GP Mk. 10 bombs of the GR.1, the GR.3 has also seen the addition of two AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles and weak ECM. As with the GR.1, the GR.3 provides excellent strike power for relatively low cost, though the type can also more effectively attack enemy helicopters operating in its vicinity thanks to its AIM-9L compliment, or defend itself to some extent against enemy fighters if they get close. The major drawbacks of the Harrier GR.3 are its poor ECM, lack of a long-range air-to-air missile, and low top-speed. While the type does have ECM, it is not particularly powerful, and this leaves the Harrier GR.3 vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs. Given its relatively low cost, these drawbacks are not prohibitive, and good timing, or a fighter escort, can minimize the threat to the GR.3.
The Harrier GR.3 is a relatively inexpensive multirole combat platform available to United Kingdom and BLUFOR decks in Wargame: Red Dragon. The type has seen the reduction to 150 rounds of cannon ammunition, and an increase in top speed to 750km/h. It has also been equipped with 38 SNEB rockets in place of the MC/GP Mk. 10 bombs. Its ECM remains at the same strength (10%), and it continues to carry two AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles. Its advantages and disadvantages are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle, but the replacement of the 500kg bombs with 68mm rockets has changed the Harrier GR.3's role to more specifically attacking lightly armored vehicles and transports.
