The JDS Kongō (Japanese: こんごう) is a Kongō class guided missile destroyer in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
This modification of the US Navy's Arleigh Burke class destroyers was first built in 1990 by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI Corporation to replace the Hatakaze class missile destroyers. Only 4 Kongo destroyers were built with the final ship, the Choukai, finished in 1995, then commissioned in mid-1998. In service with the JMSDF there is the Kongo (DD-173), Kirishima (DD-174), Myoko (DD-175), Choukai (DD-176).
The Kongo is the most expensive ship available to BLUFOR at 420 points, and is the only true destroyer that they can use.(The Hatsuyuki is generally considered a frigate due to its small size) It can fire off 4 ASM in a quick burst twice, for a total of 8 missiles, it also has 96 anti air missiles with a high range and an ok accuracy, making it good for screening other ships. Its naval gun has a very long ground range and a decent fire rate of 1 shot every 2 seconds, with its range of 6125 it can just outrange a komar, making it very useful as the komar cannot be targeted by ASM, due to their low health however, the Kongo can generally just sink one or two before they pull back again, this can be very useful if your ships are not in a position to move closer to the opponents fleet. Finally, it has a large amount of health, and the highest speed for a destroyer at 30 knots, meaning that it can outrun the only two ships capable of outgunning it, bear in mind though, that its acceleration is slow, and it is a large target that will automatically be fired on by enemy forces due to its high cost.
