Available to NATO forces, the LARS-2 is a West German multiple rocket launcher vehicle.Developed by the Bundeswehr, the original LARS entered service in 1969. It is a short-range MLRS, ranging no more than 14km, made of two packs of 18 rocket each. This weapon system was first mounted on a Magirus-Deutz truck's chassis. That same MD Jupiter the Bundeswehr has for a supply truck in Wargame: European Escalation.
In the 80's, the LARS went through an upgrade program, and that same weapon system was now mounted on the much more powerful MAN truck, also fitted with an improved fire system. In the 90's the LARS-2 were finally retired from service to be replaced by American M270 MLRS.
The LARS-2 (Leichtes Artillerie Raketen System) is an upgraded variant of the original LARS multiple launch rocket system. Between 1980 and 1983 all 209 LARS systems were upgraded to the LARS-2 standard. This multiple launch rocket system played an important role with German Army's artillery forces. In 1998 the last LARS-2 was phased out from active service in favor to the US M270 MLRS.
