During the developed of M113, it was planned to have 82mm and 107mm Mortars Carriers. M125A1 was the 81mm mortar carrier and M106 was the 107mm carrier.
Each 70s Cavalry platoon had one M106A1 while the more modern Cavalry troop had two to three mortars in a mortar section. The Armored and Mechanized Infantry Battalions along the three infantry battalions of the Berlin Brigade had a mortar platoon of 6 M106A2.

Like all mortar carriers, the M106A2 fulfills a role in between combat range and long range fire support, as they are closer to the frontlines they can usually have their shells reach their targets faster than artillery, making them a useful asset to have
