The M48A1 Chaparral is an Anti-Aircraft vehicle for the United States that first appeared in Wargame: European Escalation.

History[]

In 1977 Ford and Texas Instruments started a project to give the Chaparral a limited all-weather capability through the addition of a FLIR camera. The test firings in 1978 also used a new smokeless motor, which greatly improved visibility after firing and made it much easier to fire follow-up rounds. The testing proved successful, and the FLIR upgrades were carried out in September 1984. Existing missiles were upgraded with the new motor to become the MIM-72E, while new-build versions (otherwise identical) were known as the MIM-72F.

M48 Chaparral, M167 Vulcan Air Defense System (VADS) and Stingers served as the primary tactical air defense assets of the US Army. In US service, M48 Chaparral were used in Chaparral battery in 70's era Heavy Division Air Defense Artillery battalions to provide air defense to important areas or unit groupings (bridges, choke points, logistic areas, etc.). In the Gulf war era Air Defense Artillery Battalion each three Air Defense Artillery batteries has Chaparral platoon with 9 units serving along side two M168 platoons and a Stinger Platoon.

Overview[]

European Escalation[]

AirLand Battle[]

The M48A1 Chaparral is one of the United States main Integrated Air Defense Network vehicles and because of this plays a very important role in most US decks. It's main purpose in a US deck is to provide heavy Anti-Helicopter support as it's MIM-72F has a much improved range over it's predecessor the M48. The range improvements allow this to act as a not only a defensive tool against helicopters but and offensive one that can shoot helicopters carelessly left in the open. Unfortunately it is still held back by one of the main problems of it's ancestor, it only has four missiles which is only enough to kill two helicopters if all for hit. This means an increased reliance on supply trucks.
