The Mil Mi-24 "Hind" is a Soviet attack and transport helicopter. Mi-24P is the gunship version of the infamous attack helicopter. The Hind-F Keeps the hard-hitting 9M114 Kokon, but replaces the 12.7mm YakB with a fixed GSh-30-2K 30mm cannon, located on the right side of the aircraft.

Overview and tactics

  • Decently priced and with a high availability, the Mi-24 Hind-E is not to be blown off. The Kokon sports an above-average accuracy of 11, a rare range of 2800, and an average AP of 20. The helicopter itself comes with a strength of 10 and 1 front and side armour, making it much more durable then any NATO Attack Helicopter.
  • With the 30mm GSh-30-2K it brings some more firepower to the fight, with the cost of a dramatically decreased range versus both ground and air targets.

History

In the middle of the 1960s, while the western countries were looking the helicopter mainly as a transport and rescue machine, the Soviet Army look at them as the air counterpart of the battle tanks.

Heavy armed versions of the Mi-8 Hip were in service in those years when the Mil bureau start working in a new prototype called the A-10. This new helicopter, designed primary as an anti tank weapon began tests in 1970 and was seen for first time by NATO in East Germany in 1972. The A-10 soon reached a speed record of 368 km/h.

The first versions uses a standard helo cockpit with pilots side-by-side, but in 1975 would appear the Hind-D with the now traditional attack cockpit in a tandem configuration.

The most popular version, the Mi-24V Hind-E features improved 9M114 Kokon ATGM's, making it a worthwile opponent.

A more later version, the Mi-24P Hind-F sports a spiffy looking fixed 30mm GSh-30-2K cannon on the right side of the aircraft, with 700 rounds, effectively making the Mi-24P a proper gunship.
