The Minsk Air Group is one of the many air groups that can be deployed in the Climb Mount Narodnaia campaign of Wargame: Red Dragon.

Description[]

They are immediately available for deployment from the start of the campaign and are always attached to Task Force Minsk unless they are assigned to an airfield on land; they provide close air support and combat air patrol to the Soviet ground forces throughout the campaign and are instrumental in the destruction of the opposing Japanese and American forces.

Composition[]

Naval Fighter Squadron[]

Not to be confused with the Naval Fighter squadron of the Far East Air Group, this is a pure air superiority fighter squadron with Yak-141s armed with advanced AAMs and good ECM that can be a match with any fighter squadron in the theater.

It is a pre-deployed unit and consists of:

1st Naval Strike Squadron[]

Yak-38s are rustic bombers carrying 500kg bombs that are effective against light targets. They will provide your troops with valuable support, but deploy more powerful planes as soon as you control an airport. It costs 10 points to deploy and consists of:

2nd Naval Strike Squadron[]

The napalm bombs carried by these Yak-38s are ultimate weapons against infantry regiments. They can also create confusion amongst armored formations. Use them to dislodge entrenched infantry or restrict and entire area for several minutes. It costs 10 points to deploy and consists of:

Tips & Tricks[]

  • The HE bomber squadron is an absolute MUST to deploy unless you are enough of a tactical genius that you can hold off a mass rush by nearly (and sometimes over) a hundred Japanese light tanks with whatever you have on hand at the moment. Its main advantage over the two other bomber squadrons in the Far East Air Group is price and quantity, at just 70 points and with 6 planes it allows the player to throw out airstrike after airstrike with little time in-between.
  • The napalm bomber squadron is much less useful, the opposing side rarely garrisons buildings and while the napalm stuns tanks well, it rarely outright destroys them, they should only be deployed later, after all the more important battlegroups and air squadrons have already been deployed.
  • These guys will be your main source of air support for taking the areas of Kanoya and Nagasaki if you did not realize early on that only the SEAD squadron from the Far East Air Group could be launched from Hiroshima to those areas, and did not re-assign those units to Gobo (and then Kanoya). So remember to preserve them and DO NOT ever use them in naval battles.
