The Mirage 5F is a multirole combat aircraft for France that first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The Mirage 5F is a single-engine, single-seat, supersonic strike aircraft developed out of a request by Israel for a variant of the Mirage IIIE with more fuel, and fewer avionics to reduce cost and maintenance, and increase range. The Israelis ordered 50 Mirage 5's in 1966 - however, due to tensions in the Middle East, France embargoed Israel and held the Mirage 5's, eventually re-purposing them for the Armée de l'Air, and re-designating them Mirage 5F. Mirage 5F were used in the ground attack role. The type retained the DEFA 30mm cannons, but featured seven pylons, up from five on the Mirage IIIE, increased fuel capacity and simplified avionics. Like the Mirage III, the Mirage 5 was successful in the export market.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Mirage 5F is a 130-point multi-role combat aircraft available to French and NATO decks. Armed with twin DEFA 550 30mm cannons, eight powerful SAMP T200 400kg bombs and two R.550 Magic missiles, the Mirage 5F can be used to effectively attack light to moderately armored vehicle columns and infantry units in cover. The eight bombs provide a wide area of destruction, and the Mirage can also attack enemy helicopters operating in its vicinity with its accurate R.550 Magic missiles. The Mirage 5F's powerful strike capabilities come at a cost, however, and the type has several drawbacks. The Mirage 5F's lack of ECM leaves it vulnerable to long range SAMs and AAMs, and at a cost of 130 points per aircraft, it is not an insignificant loss to its controller if the 5F is shot down. Its short range aerial weapon compliment, while accurate, requires the Mirage 5F to get close to its intended target, and it is unlikely for the Mirage to get the first shot against a similarly priced enemy air superiority fighter. A fighter or SEAD escort is recommended if enemy air or SAM activity is anticipated.

Red Dragon[]

The Mirage 5F in Wargame: Red Dragon is nearly unchanged from its AirLand Battle configuration, and is available to French and BLUFOR decks. The aircraft has the same cost and characteristics, but has received weak ECM (10%). This is not a significant enough bump to improve its survivability, especially against the more advanced missiles in Red Dragon. Its advantages and drawbacks are largely the same between the two installments.
