The Motostrelki (Russian: Мотострелки, meaning "Motorized Riflemen") is the main line infantry unit of the USSR in the Wargame series, they were first introduced in Wargame: European Escalation. Notice not to be confused with CSSR Motostrelci.

History[]

The Motostrelki was the Soviet Union's main infantry unit during the Cold War. Although literally means "Motorized Shooter (стрелок started to refer to common infantry since the Civil War, previously an honorary title)", but the Soviet Motostrelki is a mechanized unit. Each Tank Division has a Motor Rifle Regiment mounted on BMP, while each Motor Rifle Division has two Motor Rifle Regiments equipped with BTR and one Motor Rifle Regiment equipped with BMP. Artic Motor Rifle Division were mounted on MT-LB vehicles due to it low weight. Lower readiness Divisions in the core of the Soviet Union has some of the motor rifle formations mounted on trucks due to lack of equipment.

In Western common senses, Motostrelki's overall quality is not as good as their opponents, and training is mainly focused on discipline rather than marksmanship. Since even before WWII, the USSR and Russia have a history of not relying on training for its regular infantry force. The subsequent series of political events (e.g. Great Purge) and armed conflicts also made the training of Red Army soldiers quite backward.

According to NATO intelligence, Soviet Armed Forces doctrine is mainly based on Combined Arms and Armor Breakthroughs. Massed tank formations are the main force of attack, while infantry are responsible for supporting, securing artillery, and acting as scouts.

The strategy to an assault within the USSR involved tanks leading assaults in the middle, while Infantry used them as cover and headed into the enemy's defenses. There, the tanks would destroy important equipment, whilst the massed infantry formation would search for enemy emplacements which may disrupt the assault breakthrough.

RPG-7 is a anti-tank grenade launcher entered service in 1961 by GSKB-47 (Bazalt) as an improvement of the RPG-2. It has the function of launching different types of warheads to enhance anti-tank or anti-infantry capabilities, that is also the main reason AP Power differs in-game. The V model (also known as 6G3) designed in 1962 has a upgraded PGO-7V optical sight.

RGO (Ruchnaya Granata Oboronitel'naya - "Defensive Hand Grenade") is a defensive anti-personnel fragmentation hand grenade of impact action, which is different from its NATO counterparts.

Overview[]

European Escalation[]

They are armed with the latest of the "Avtomat Kalashnikov" series of assault rifles, and the RPG-7, both weapons have been considered reliable and fitting for the USSR's military.

Motostrelki are basic rifle platoon infantry, good on defense, and offense, though they might not be the best at killing infantry, their RPG accuracy can be very useful for combined arms assaults, which the USSR is very good for, on top of that, their cap is bigger than most worthwhile infantry of the NATO.

AirLand Battle[]

Red Dragon[]

Since the introduction of the '90 variant, Motostrelki in Red Dragon was no longer able to use BMP-3, and its LAW was downgraded too.

Motostrelki's performance is average, while the cost-effectiveness of the unit is at least lower than CSSR Motostrelci. Especially for the Soviet Union, Regular Infantry should not be counted on to do every job. Due to the lack of Militia-tier units in the Soviet Union, the task of attracting firepower and maintaining the front line would require Motostrelki to pair with MT-LB, while the real breakthrough would be entrusted to others.
