The PTZ-89 is a Chinese tank destroyer that first appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon. It was fitted with a 120 mm smoothbore gun (same as the PTZ-59 in-game).

History[]

The "PTZ" is the abbreviation of "Cannon, Assault Gun, Self-propelled" in Chinese, while "BWK120" is somehow nonsense, because "BW" represents "Baotou Foreign Trade", and "BK" represents "Baotou Scientific Research". The name "PTZ-89" was only confirmed in the 21st century, while it was simply referred to as "Type 89" at the time.

In real-life, PTZ-89 does not use foreign trade equipments, and its main gun can be traced back to WZ-122. The design requirements for the weapon itself originated from the threat posed by the Soviet armored forces to China in the 1970s. It was a frontline defense weapon belonging to the artillery sequence, used to solve the situation where China's anti-tank weapons at that time were mainly HEAT shells.

In 1981, the basic design of PTZ-89 was completed. The weapon was being tested until late 1988, when it finally began initial production. It first entered service in 1989, and by nowadays it was retired, around 100 had been produced.

Overview and tactics[]

The powerful main gun of PTZ-89 can penetrate most enemy MBTs at short-medium range, and some at even longer ranges. However, does not have a gun stabilization meant it cannot fire on the move, and the useless armor makes it fragile even against light anti-tank weapons. It should be kept static and hidden (or protected) in most situations. The autoloader of PTZ-89 can guarantee a RPM of 10 and thus ensure significant damage to enemies.

Overall, PTZ-89 cannot be used for offensive purposes, and in defense, as it only has Poor-level optics, it needs to work in coordination with reconnaissance units. An alternate option, PTZ-59 will be slightly more aggressive in combat.
