The Q-5I is a Chinese aircraft that first appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The Nanchang Q-5 (NATO reporting name "FANTAN") is a single-seat, twin-engine, supersonic strike aircraft used by the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Based on the Mikoyan MiG-19, the Nanchang Q-5 featured a longer, area-ruled fuselage, nose-cone, new wings with increased area and reduced sweep, and improved ordnance carriage capability. The Q-5 was designed primarily for the Close Air Support role, and the type entered production in 1969.

Overview[]

The Q-5I is an inexpensive strike platform available to Chinese and REDFOR decks. It is equipped with an NR-30 30mm autocannon and sixteen 130mm rockets. The type has a fair turn radius, and provides cost-effective support against lightly armored columns or infantry. It has no ECM, nor an air-to-air weapon compliment (other than the NR-30), and so a fighter or SEAD escort should be considered if enemy action is anticipated where the Q-5I is performing operations.
