The Su-24 is a SEAD Aircraft available to Soviet and PACT decks. It first appeared in Wargame: AirLand Battle.

History[]

The Su-24 (NATO reporting name: FENCER) is a twin-engine, single-tail, two-seat, variable-geometry wing supersonic bomber used by the Soviet Air Force. Work on the Su-24 was begun in 1961 by Sukhoi to provide the Soviet Air Force with an all-weather bomber with precision strike capabilities. After a series of developments, one of the earliest eliminating the swing-wing, the baseline prototype of what became the Su-24 finally flew in 1970. The type was accepted into service in 1975 and was also exported to the air forces of more than 10 other countries.

Overview[]

AirLand Battle[]

The Su-24 is a relatively inexpensive SEAD aircraft available to Soviet and PACT decks. Armed with an internal GSh-6-23 Gatling-type cannon and two Kh-28 antiradar missiles, the Su-24 can follow up strikes against SAM sites with a burst of gunfire if the missile misses its mark. The Kh-28 is powerful and has fair accuracy. The major drawback of the Su-24 is its Medium rated ECM. While the type also has Medium rated stealth, its purpose as a SEAD platform is somewhat compromised by its relatively weak ECM, and the type will likely be receiving return fire from its target. At 75 points per aircraft, however, this is not a prohibitive drawback.

Red Dragon[]

The Su-24 in Wargame: Red Dragon is a relatively inexpensive SEAD aircraft available to Soviet and REDFOR decks. It carries the same armament, ECM (20%) and stealth ratings as in AirLand Battle, but changes have been made to its Kh-28 missile. The missile is much more powerful, but less accurate. The strengths and weaknesses of the Su-24 are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle, but the Kh-28's worse accuracy means more shots will likely need to be taken by the Su-24 to destroy its intended target.
