The Soviet T-72B obr. 1989 is a variant of the T-72B. It was first introduced in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

The T-72B Obr. 1989 was the one of the last major T-72 variants to be mass produced before the collapse of the Soviet Union. The T-72B Obr. 1989 was the most advanced T-72 variant at the time of its introduction.

The armament of the T-72B Obr. 1989 used the standard 2A46M 125mm cannon, firing either APFS-DS (almost certainly using depleted uranium), HEAT-FS, HE-Fragmentation, or laser guided ATGMs. The T-72B Obr. 1989 also used a remotely fired NSVT. The NSVT still had to be loaded by hand, and retained the ability to fire non-remotely.

The protection of the T-72B Obr. 1989 was improved dramatically. While retaining the same internal composite armor scheme as all other T-72B variants, the 1989 variant included the new Kontakt-5 second generation explosive reactive armor. This ERA was mounted on distinctive triangular mountings on the turret cheeks, along with flush mountings on the upper hull glacis. Kontakt-5 had the advantage of offering much more protection against kinetic rounds and even depleted uranium rounds.
