The Tornado ADV F3 is an air superiority fighter for the United Kingdom that was introduced in Wargame: AirLand Battle.
The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engine, two-seat, swing-wing multi-role fighter used by Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. It was developed in three main variants: IDS (Interdictor/Strike), ADV (Air Defense Variant), and ECR (Electronic Combat/Reconnaissance). The genesis of the Tornado dates to the 1960's, where West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada began examining potential replacements for their F-104 Starfighter aircraft. The Multi-Role Combat Aircraft team saw several changes by 1969, Canada dropping out of the project for political reasons, Belgium deciding to purchase Mirage aircraft from France, and the Netherlands deciding the aircraft being developed was too complicated. Panavia GmbH was formed by the United Kingdom, West Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands (before they left the project) to produce the Tornado.
The Tornado ADV F3 or "Air Defense Variant" is an upgraded version of the ADV used by the United Kingdom, first flown in November 1985, and introduced in July 1986 to replace the F2. The F3 was equipped with more powerful engines, automatic sweeping wing, new under-wing pylons to increase AIM-9 carriage from two to four, and improvements to its Foxhunter radar.
The Tornado ADV F3 is a prototype air superiority fighter available to United Kingdom decks. The main differences between the Tornado ADV F3 and its predecessor, the F2 (besides the price) are that the F3's semi-active Skyflash missile has been replaced with the longer-ranged Skyflash Super TEMP, the F3 has increased AIM-9 capacity, and has been given better ECM (Good as opposed to Medium). However, all of these improvements come at a cost: the F3 costs 140 points to the F2's 115 points. The major drawback of the ADV F3, apart from increased price, is that its Skyflash Super TEMP is a semi-active missile, which requires the ADV F3 to continue closing with its target once fired. This leaves the ADV F3 open to return fire from its target, though the Super TEMP does provide the Tornado with first shot against the majority of PACT aircraft.
The Tornado F.3 in Wargame: Red Dragon is an air superiority fighter available to United Kingdom and BLUFOR decks. It is left largely untouched from its AirLand Battle configuration, albeit with slightly improved ECM (40%). It costs 135 points per aircraft, carries the same weapon loadout, but is also no longer a prototype. Its advantages and disadvantages are largely the same in Red Dragon as in AirLand Battle.
