The Yakovlev Yak-38 (NATO reporting name "FORGER-A") is a single-engine, single-seat, Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) fighter developed for the Soviet Navy. The Yak-38 was the only operational VTOL aircraft in Soviet arsenals, and served on Soviet Kiev-Class aircraft carriers. Developed in the late 1960's, the Yak-38 was first flown in 1971 and introduced to Soviet arsenals in 1976. The type was capable of high subsonic speeds, but was hampered by a poor weapons load. In total, 143 Yak-38's were produced.
Overview[]
AirLand Battle[]
The Yak-38 is an inexpensive light strike platform available to Soviet and PACT decks. The type carries four napalm bombs, making it a cost-effective platform for area denial, or to flush troops and vehicles out of cover. The Yak-38's drawbacks include its lack of ECM, lack of a gun or any aerial missiles, and relatively slow speed. All of these factors leave the Yak-38 vulnerable to SAMs and fighters in general. Given its 65 point cost, these drawbacks are not prohibitive.
Red Dragon[]
In Wargame: Red Dragon, the Yak-38 is a relatively inexpensive light strike platform available to Soviet and REDFOR decks. It has the same overall characteristics as in AirLand Battle, and its strengths and weaknesses are largely the same.
