ZTS-63-I   ZTS-63-II

The ZTS-63-I (industry code: WZ-211) is a Chinese amphibious tank that appeared in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History[]

ZTS-63 is known as Type 63 before 1987 nomenclature revision.

The Soviet Union delivered PT-76 tanks to PRC in the 1950s. Their lightweight and amphibious capability were appreciated by the PLA, and in 1958 an order was placed for the development of an indigenous vehicle in the same vein. Initially a copy of the PT-76 called the Type 60 was made, but unsatisfactory performance and reliability issues prompted a redesign. The new design was finalized in 1963 and entered service as the Type 63 light tank (not to be confused with the ZSD-63). While resembling the PT-76, the Type 63 tanks featured notable differences, such as a new engine, a relocated driver's station, and a new turret with an 85 mm gun. Overall dimensions were slightly enlarged for extra flotation.

As the previous Type 63 was commissioned by 1965, there were some flaws suggested by the PLA units that received the tank, thus the need for an upgrade on ZTS-63 arose. There were a few major modifications for the tank including single transmission control stick, HMG gun mantle, safety locks for hatches, revised seats, new suspension springs and etc. Among these modifications, some parts from late-production ZTQ-62 including its fire control system and laser rangefinder (though not shown in-game) were also introduced to the ZTS-63 revision by the late 1970s.

Overview[]

The Armor of this vehicle is very weak, and the low Stabilizer obviously does not support hit-and-run tactics. It is recommended to use the upgraded ZTS-63-II.
